I photograph to document people, places, color and texture. To capture the sights, sounds, and smells of an ordinary moment — my son’s eyes squeezed in laughter as he lazes under a blanket or my daughter’s pensive gaze over breakfast, her spoon of oatmeal frozen while her thoughts run on. These photos urge me to hold on to ordinary moments.
Kate Albright: Breakfast at Grandma’s
Throughout the years of photographing my family and my community, this remains a favorite portrait of mine. I cherish the mixture of light in my mom’s kitchen with the pensive expression on my firstborn’s face as she interprets her own big thoughts while eating oatmeal and conversing with her grandmother. Her spoon pauses and freezes this moment for me to hold close as time pushes forward. It’s been really cool seeing bodies of work nurtured within my critique group. In many cases, feedback from our members was critical in a photographer’s end result. I love seeing an artist’s project grow and change as we visit and re-visit their work. I appreciate the varied backgrounds and styles of our regular members. Being part of a regular critique group is invaluable as a maker and immensely rewarding as a nurturer.
