The goal of my photography is to provide a glimpse into the everyday lives of people at work and play, in order to better understand them. The uniqueness and variety of life forms and cultures that have developed in order to survive the harshness of our world and competition within and from other species is, to me, a source of continual amazement and inspiration. As a doctor of infectious diseases who came of age in the AIDS era, I have a keen appreciation for the fragility of life, the impact of the environment, and unpredictability of life’s circumstances. For me, photography is a way to understand an individual’s lot in life and the trajectory of their existence, within the context of their surroundings
Woody Eisenberg: Two Pied Crows in the Vlei
I have been fortunate to travel to countries all over the word pursuing my passion for photography, but I had never been to sub-Saharan Africa. In the spring of 2018, I joined a small group of photographers going to Namibia, a big, raw, wild and often bleak country of deserts: enormous wind swept sand dunes constantly morphing and on the move, with colors changing from white to deep red to bright gold as the merciless sun reflects off their sweeping profiles. This photo of pied crows on the branch of a desiccated tree was taken early one morning in a salt flat, a vlei in Afrikaans, know as Sossusvlei.
