When dealing with artwork whose intent is not readily apparent, I think most people (and that includes me) will create a narrative out of the imagery — it’s human nature to come up with a story to explain the unknown. Unlike many of my previous pieces in which what storyline might exist was vague and enigmatic, with In Media Res I have presented an overt narrative in a three-panel comic-book format. But like the titular Latin phrase (meaning “into the middle of things”), the viewer is being dropped into a tale already in progress, with only a handful of potential clues as to what is happening. Who are these characters? Who is speaking? Where and when is the action taking place? If a story exists the viewer is required to create it, making this piece, in some ways, interactive with its audience.
