Ted Papoulas: Sally's Still-Life

Ted Papoulas: Sally’s Still-Life

SKU: 2022-116.

This piece is my first father/daughter art collaboration. My eldest daughter, Sally (9), took the photo which served as the basis for this painting at Noah’s Restaurant in Stonington, CT. She took the photo, I turned it into a painting and we both share wonderful memories of enjoying numerous breakfasts there together over the years!
Back in college, it was incredibly enjoyable creating art alongside good friends. I was constantly surrounded by energy, gaining inspiration from their work and receiving feedback on mine. Many years later, I shared an artists’ space in The Old American Can Factory in Brooklyn, and again it was exciting to be in the middle of such a creative environment. Now, living in the suburbs and working in my home studio up on the third floor, it’s easy to feel isolated and removed from other artists. The Studio Montclair critique group is a great way to receive regular feedback on your work from a variety of voices as well as to be inspired by their work. It forces members to verbalize their thoughts and reactions to artwork, prompting deeper discussions and revealing new ideas. And, it doesn’t hurt to have a monthly deadline.

Bio
Ted is a fine artist, illustrator, and stereoscopic photographer from New York. He studied at Pratt Institute, spending most of his post-college years in Brooklyn. He has worked as an illustrator (most notably illustrating the award winning picture book The Sound of All Things,) has shown his paintings in numerous fine art exhibitions and has also exhibited his underwater stereoscopic 3D photography. He now lives in Montclair with his wife Drury, a Montclair native and long-time teacher at Watchung Elementary, and their two daughters.

Artistic Statement
I feel that there is a universal appeal in the specific. When I am attracted to a scene or subject, whatever the reason, I believe my connection and emotional attachment will be imbued in the final painting and ultimately resonate with the viewer. Each individual will see the work from a unique perspective based on his or her own life experiences. While I am a realistic painter, I do not consider myself a photorealist as I interpret and change my subjects, never hiding the fact that the work is a painted image, not a photo. Brooklyn, my home for roughly 20 years, and New York City are my favorite subject matter, but as an avid SCUBA diver and nature lover, more organic themes are beginning to appear in my work.
