SOUSSEN: The 5 Elements (Pentaptychon)

SOUSSEN: The 5 Elements (Pentaptychon)

SKU: 2020MBR00216.

I’m SOUSSEN. The Concrete Artist.

I’m a self-educated artist and my work is abstract, versatile, complex!

It is important for me that my works can be experienced and therefore I allow viewers to touch my works, touch the surface to experience its haptics.

Even though my focus is now on Concrete Tapestries, the work shown here started it.

So far it’s my biggest piece, yet. A pentaptychon (5 pieces) with an overall size of (H X W) 47.2″ x 118.1″, showing the five elements.

I’m fascinated by structural elements. Haptic surfaces. Old walls. The cross-section of stones and precious stones. The decay from which something new can emerge without losing its traditional character.

Therefore I create confluent relief-like surfaces with cement, marble dust and lime putty and as a base I use construction boards, which enhances the wall like character of my works. At the beginning I only decide which colour palette I like to use. Everything else comes from within, is spontaneous and automatic directed by my subconscious. It is a dialogue with the material. Where and how will cracks appear and form?

What will cling, what will dislodge, how the colours develop during the creative process? All this can only be influenced to a limited extent. But that keeps the creative working process exciting.

My preferred materials are cement, marble dust, lime putty, pigments, various soils and sands, wood stain, acrylic, ink, acrylic emulsion, tempera etc. on construction boards ( (polystyrene rigid foam board with cemented surfaces and a glass fibre mesh).

I call myself an Abstract Expressionist or Concrete Artist. but here I mean with ‘Concrete’ the material not the style. Impulsive, intuitive, pouring, dripping, smearing I stay in dialogue with myself and, as I said, the material.

Additionally, I make use of the Process Painting of Intuitive Power by Gabriele Musebrink which is defined as: An expression of transformation, morphology in painting, birth and death the intuitive process painting of Gabriele Musebrink reflects natural life processes and scents out in the process of painting the different kinds of material to be deployed as well as the technique. She loves natural materials that have a life of their own: pigments, earths, marble powder, oils, dammar, bone glue and other. Synthetics or readymade colours are hardly used.

As a student of Gabriele Musebrink I’m dealing with this genre/technique for years. And after a while I started to develop my own characteristic visual language on construction boards as described above developed.

My current focus on Concrete Art is also combined with my interest in Augmented Reality (AR). Some of my works are complemented with a digital layer. With the app Artivive I create a new space in which the already finished works are lifted into a digital area. The combination of rudimentary material (cement, lime putty etc.) and digital software expands my own horizon. My overseas stays in Australia and Qatar as well as my various travels also influenced my work. Colours, landscapes, scents and smells of these places provide infinite inspiration.
