I find it interesting that both bright light and deep shadow can be equally obscuring even though we often think of light as purely illuminating. In this painting the subject is both being overexposed to light and exposing herself to the viewer in the light. There is the sense that one can clearly see the subject, but at the same time her features and clothes are only loosely defined.
