We live in a time of war, ideological clash, environmental change, and economic uncertainty. These are events that require attention and stimulate thought. I participate in the public forum on these issues by voting and advocating for change. As a painter, I feel the most natural way for me to address these issues is to communicate visually. To me, most of these issues are cut and dry in terms of right and wrong. But when I tackle them visually they take on a life of their own and become more complex and less clear than in a verbal dialog. I use vaguely recognizable imagery coupled with faces in an abstract style that suggests an attempt by humanity to create order of their surroundings.
I have worked in many different styles of painting from realism to abstraction, with stops at surrealism and portraiture along the way. I liked them all and in my present style, I try to incorporate a bit of all of them. Vaguely recognizable imagery, imagined objects, free brushwork, and faces are combined with a bright color pallet to witness the news of our times. I choose an issue as a starting point. Usually the voyage of creating the painting leads to a message that is more mysterious leaving the observer the opportunity to openly interpret what they see.
