Oscar Peterson’s Artist Statement Walls are magic. They’re almost like truth tellers (or lie detectors). You put a painting on the wall and you start to see its beauty and it’s flaws. When you put two paintings on the wall, they start to talk to each other, revealing things that you could not see in one painting or in both paintings when they were on their easels. When I see my paintings on gallery walls, they make me think about what more I could’ve done. They inspire me to do the next set better. But they remind me that they are NOT me. I was in the moment while painting them and I did my best at the time. I view it as something that I was a part of, but is no longer a part of me. And now they’re done and it’s time to move on to the next better paintings.
Oscar Peterson: Up Here
A revival of classical realism using a contemporary view of an old trope. This piece challenges the male gaze. A very difficult painting to look at. You know where her eyes are, and you know you should be looking at her there, but is that what you are looking at? Painting the figure is still the ultimate challenge for any artist.
