Miriam Stern: Cover Up VIII

Miriam Stern: Cover Up VIII

SKU: 2021-00036.

Dirty paint rags, and the back of a canvases. Something is bleeding through the canvas and staining the rag.

George Floyd’s killing and the BLM protests shook me up. As a white, Jewish, middle-class, woman artist I felt the need for introspection of my own racism and my country’s racist and violent history. In my studio I was reworking old paintings. I painted tarps and boxes covering the original work. But like someone who has committed a crime and tries to conceal it, parts of the original paintings came through. It is like the crime of racism that cannot be buried. We must confront it personally and collectively with honesty.
