My interdisciplinary practice is centered in visual, performative, and written arts. I often work in metaphor and symbolism that references ideas about imagination as a healthy path to growth and creative freedom. My work takes the form of sculptures, paintings, poems, and performances that engage the viewer or audience in a questioning of reality and truth.
Michael Taylor: Bolide de Veritate: 020
These pieces are part of a mythology series based on meteors and comets as a form of communication. The markings on these meteorites represent a language of truth or clarity, with the meteorites functioning as an intergalactic tablet. The engraved lines also reference navigation and cyphered language influenced by African wood pattern making. . These works were made from trees in New York and Michigan. Hand cut by the artist with chainsaws and carpentry tools, they also represent his own migration from the south to the north during which he cut the original pieces. He continues to work with the unprocessed wood chunks to make new works as he continues his own intellectual and physical migrations between states. As a writer, he considers the symbols to be a subconscious language and the wood to be tablets representing outer space meteorites referencing freedom.
