Mary Alice Orito: Indigenous People: Mask#1

Mary Alice Orito: Indigenous People: Mask#1

SKU: 1033.

Phyllis Galembo’s photos of Indigenous people were the inspiration.

My art practice is influenced by process. I prefer to create a surface that morphs into an unexpected form. As an artist, my responsibility is to be in the ‘now’, to see what’s happening, to be part of it. It dictates to me as much as I dictate to it. We change minute by minute, layer by layer and dutifully drag the impact of society’s influence into all that we do and think. We seldom stop along the way to ask “how does it affect me?” Art is always asking that question.

The entire artistic process is so captivating, so singular, so rewarding it trumps everything else in life. One starts with nothing, ends up with something–a concrete thing and then shares it with others.
