When the pandemic hit, the world slowed down. Going outside and walking became an escape from the monotony of being indoors, the noise of the media, and the trauma of social unrest. It allowed me to appreciate the natural world in a way that I hadn’t in a very long time. My paintings are inspired by nature, the seasons, traditional landscape painting, and the simplicity of childhood, when running and playing outside was a simple pleasure and a part of each day. Each painting’s life is a series of marks, colors and textures that record the sensory experience of nature, not its exact rendering. Each expresses a particular time of year, day, and weather. Looking at one of my paintings, the viewer should feel like they are rolling in the grass in the Summer or touching and smelling flowering trees in the Spring much like they did in childhood, a remembrance of the simplicity of that time. The way the air in each season feels, its colors, and the textures of that time of year and place are contained in each image. I hope the viewer will get lost for a few moments in that feeling.
Martine Kasmin: Spring
These paintings are a response to the change of season from Winter to Spring and from Summer to Fall. I was inspired by the bright colors of early spring, the young greens and pinks of the season. In Tree Dance, the gesture of the trees affected the composition and mood of the painting as well as the vibrant colors of fall.
