Margaret Rose Vendryes: Unmade, San Diego (Scripted)

Photograph of an unmade hotel bed recently vacated, torn to crop, suspended inside a deep white frame and viewed through my handwritten recollections of that night.

Unmade beds tell more than the bodies that left them. Dreams or dreamless sleep, lovemaking or fucking, tears or laughter through tears resonate in those creases and stains soon to be washed away. Unmade is a visual record of my conjugal travels, unmade. Stained, torn, crumpled, and made into pristine objects that yearn to be read. My belated reaction, etched into a solid, but transparent surface, to everything relinquished for the sake of traditional “marriage” to a same-sex fiancé. A marriage that did not endure.

My bloodlines are diverse, but it is my African ancestry that drives me to be present by making art. Capturing body language with any material available, means more to me than rendering a recognizable likeness —the results are wholly my experience of a person or incident or memory. Popular culture shapes visual art and, in turn, art documents culture. Right now, more than ever before, gender fluidity is alive in American popular culture through art. I have spent all my adult life positioning myself as an activist in the academy. Like many people of the African Diaspora in academic life, I stand as role model in all that I do. I commune with my ancestors who guide my creative projects. I strive to make work that is as forthcoming and honest as Africa’s arts as well as unpack my life experiences now that I am a queer elder.
