Mandi Moerland: Cool
A human body in motion is always expressive.
Challenging the body is about technique, skill and creativity. We live in our bodies, express ourselves through them. Painting the body in motion, and creating a visual field that explores expression of our bodies is what my painting is about.
My first art form was dance, and I always kept drawing to the side. In 2010 the desire to revisit painting and drawing emerged and I have been working for the past 9 years exploring movement and paint. I am intrigued by the communications made between dancers through movement. My focus is to create a visual field that explores that communication and expression of body movement/moments and perhaps provide a window for viewers to explore their own body.
Sumi-e art was always an inspiration and fascinating phenomenon to me. My paintings are not traditional Sumi-e, however, I am inspired by the spirit of Sumi-e brush stroke.
I give you one of many definitions of Sumi-e Art.
A definition of Sumi-e : “Sumi-e is Japanese for ink “Sumi” and painting “e”. The Philosophy of Sumi-e is contrast and harmony, expressing simple beauty and elegance. Sumi-e attempts to capture the Chi or “life spirit” of the subject, painting in the language of the spirit. A Sumi-e artist becomes the rose to paint it. The art of brush painting aims to depict the spirit rather than the semblance of the object. Patience is essential in brush painting. Brush strokes are a few as possible to depict the subject and there is no correcting” a painting. The combination of ink and rice paper make for very spontaneous work and it is virtually impossible to go over a stroke. “

My ink paintings are water based ink on Bristol board. Included in this exhibit are oil paintings of dancers. Mediums are about technique, and I enjoy the struggle, I hope you enjoy too!
