I create texture by using a variety of materials, layering, adding sand, fabric paint and gloss to my paints, and using brush techniques in thick paint. Both the multimedia tactile acrylic painting on canvas and the copper ornament are meant to be touched.
Jon Gabry: Fall Fading Leaves
This tactile painting represents the progression of sight loss. On the left, sight is 20/20. The colors are rich and bright in 2D. As sight declines, the 2D colors blur, fade. A long, white cane used by the blind leans against the tree on the right. This tree is seen by feeling the rough trunk, the smooth leaves, and the spikey grass and realizing a new way to experience color: through texture.
