It is a joy for me to explore the possibilities of acrylics in my painting. Each piece I create is distinct and follows its own unique development and rhythm with no preconceived methodology or outcome. My work is a process of constant transformation using shape, color, and texture, one element building upon the next, until a whole is achieved and I’m satisfied that it is, at least for the moment, complete.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, Joan Knauer holds an MA in Art and Education from Teachers College. She first taught Art and later ESL.
As a child, she always enjoyed drawing. In graduate school her artistic explorations were as a ceramicist and she continued to dabble in this for several years wherever she found a ceramic studio. Upon retirement she returned to her passion with the discovery first of collage, and then painting. She is grateful to have had the opportunity to study with Harriet Finck and Margery Theroux.
