This technique new to me, machine free motion stitching, started during the Pandemic. With the feed dogs of the sewing machine down one’s hands guide the needle willy-nilly and with abandon, through the cloth, usually maintaining alarmingly fast speeds.

This is a translation of an ink drawing on paper using stitch on cloth. Normally, with my dyes and threads I live squarely within a world of color. Suddenly and urgently with quarantine I felt compelled to work in black and white, which I had never done before. Joan Didion wrote: I don’t know what I think until I write it. This series helped me process my thoughts about the global stage of Covid.
