I’m a writer as well as a painter, and in fact most of my paintings have a strong narrative thrust, either literally, as a ‘story’ told in panels, or more abstractly, as a rendering of a story-in-action. Thus my work process usually involves ideas simply coming to me, as if from outside of myself, such that I need to ‘catch’ them by writing and sketching them out, before they retreat back into Inspiration Land. So I both make sketches, as well as take notes—lots and lots of notes, as though I’m writing a ‘rough draft’ of what will of course be a painting rather than a standard narrative, composed of words. I scribble, free-associate, sketch, doodle, and dawdle, and then, finally, when all is set in my inner-bits, a painting is ready to be painted.
