Jeanne Brasile: Hermetic Alchemy

Jeanne Brasile: Hermetic Alchemy

SKU: 2021-00053.

redacted library card catalogues.

This series was inspired by Dorothy Porter, a librarian at Howard University who openly challenged the Dewey Decimal System’s racial bias by placing black scholars aside white colleagues in the stacks. The work of black academics and subjects previous to Porter had been segregated to its own section. Through redacting and collaging I attempt to simultaneously neutralize and reveal the many ‘isms’ suffused within these cards; ethnocentrism, classism, colonialism, sexism, and racism, among other transgressions
