I am compelled to create and build things. Experimenting with new concepts, methods and materials is what keeps me energized. I am at my best when I am with a pencil and a blank sheet of paper designing a new art project — particularly one that pushes my artistic boundaries. If I’ve seen it done before, it does not motivate me the way producing something new using something new does. Replicating or trying to perfect an existing template does not give me the challenge I need or seek. I am driven to put my own stamp of creativity on it — not just to be different — but to produce a work of art using whatever materials and methods that will get me to the concept I have in mind. I am by no means a purist when it comes to media — anything goes to get the desired result.
Jack Quinn: The Evolution of the Lanternfly
How can such a beautiful bug be so despised? Mother nature has doomed this critter to death at the feet of humans by squishing. This dimensional piece depicts an adult spotted lanternfly with wings spread and legs visible. It is clearly in its final stage of evolution — now sporting a bullseye on its back — clearly the target of eradication by humans.
