Isaac Stackell: View from the Upper Deck

Isaac Stackell: View from the Upper Deck

SKU: 1051.

Looking down on fellow passengers on a cruise ship.

Images have almost always been a revelation. Wherever I am they flash into my brain. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It’s been that way since I was a kid, one eye closed – being the camera before I ever owned one.

Other times, a concept or an idea is the revelation. Props are gathered, models enlisted, lighting is arranged, tests are shot – all in the process of realizing a vision. Some images have been made with film, others with digital cameras.

Either way, over the years I have developed themes that convey an appreciation of the beauty of an instant in time, visual puns and a self-deprecating sense of humor, with a native New Yorker’s edginess.

For the past 25 years, Isaac has had freelance assignments, as a photographer, Photoshop, and lighting instructor – teaching young office workers basic photo and lighting skills. Isaac currently works as a Product Photographer at B&H Photo in Manhattan, and resides in Montclair, NJ. He enters photo exhibits in the New Jersey- New York area. He enjoys bicycling with The Bicycling Touring Club of North Jersey, and making playlists from his sizeable music collection.

Isaac Stackell was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1953. He was introduced to Photography as an art and discipline in high school. While attending SUNY at Plattsburgh, New York, he combined writing and photography for local publications, and theater and photography for the Theater Department. When not performing onstage, he photographed scenes and actors. He minored in Photography and Theater.

From the bottom up in the workforce of Advertising Photography, he learned large format black and white film development, color correction, job coordination, styling, and customer service. 8×10 film cameras were the main tools, retouching done by hand on the film. He photographed house wares, jewelry, books, models, executives, and home appliances. Isaac emerged from this crucible fourteen years later to open his own studio.

Isaac and a partner started Horizon Photographics in a raw space in what is now Dumbo, and then moved it to the Union Square area. By the time he folded Horizon, he’d been using Photoshop and Quark Xpress, and the Phase One digital camera back. His work has appeared in dozens of catalogs, textbooks and greeting cards.
