I am a native New Yorker who has resided in East Brunswick, New Jersey for 36 years. Being a self taught artist I began experimenting with oil painting as a young artist producing colorful landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes. I studied Architecture at New York Institute of Technology, which also contributed to my artistic values. The responsibilities of a husband, father and working architect temporarily halted the physical aspect of painting but did not curtail my desire, over the years, to continue my creative endeavors. As I resumed my desire to paint, pastels was the medium I most preferred to work with due to its workability and wonderful array of colors. I paint almost entirely from compositions I create from digital photographs. When I paint en plein air, I attain the value of my paintings with a follow up of digital photographs to complete in my studio. I then envision these scenes behind glass, matting and frame. Light, shadow, color, depth and mood have so much of an effect that balances between realism and impressionism. That is to say, I am a realist with tendencies to incorporate impressionistic values within my paintings. I am inspired by the multitude of compositional possibilities. It excites me to think about the array of different color possibilities available to me. I design the many patterns of light and dark that are born from the scenes that I now interpret such as landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes and still life’s. Working with pastels gives me an artistic freedom and allows me to use many techniques such as line strokes, stippling and blending as a combination to create my artwork. In the colors of nature that are evoked by the landscapes of our world, I find inspiration for my work with pastels.
Harvey Rogosin: The Reflection
This is my pastel painting I named ‘The Reflection. I used a multitude of pastel pencil and sticks on an 18′ x 24’ Clairfontaine pastel mat card. I created this painting from a photo of my own reference and made it my own.
