During the year of quiet withdrawal, I sought solace in the plain objects surrounding me. I rendered them in outline, casting their enigmatic shadows in relief, contained by an intensive hatchwork of inked lines Eventually, I was lent a group of garden and woodworking tools that had belonged to a friend who died in the epidemic. These pieces contain particular meaning.
