Gwen Charles: Felled
trans·for·ma·tion
/ˌtran(t)sfərˈmāSH(ə)n/
noun: a thorough or dramatic change in form or appearance.
I have gone through several Transformations in my lifetime, a part of this ever-changing world and the changing needs of the human essence inhabiting this body.
The transformation from maiden to mother, with the physical transformation of the body through pregnancy and children rearing, the mental and emotional changes growing into a mature adult, adaptations in aging, the progress in loss and in grief.
My artwork examines impermanence and the state of transformation daily: biologically, socially, and geographically- through sculptural costumes, movement, and digital videos.
Current works are inspired by synesthetic responses to daily events commenting on reality, fantasy, and the absurdity of daily life.
In the video Felled, a woman finds a dead felled tree on a construction site, feels pity and attempts to replant it in a pile of rubble. Frustrated that her efforts are fruitless, she worries her failure reflects her own ability to care for others or herself, she gives up.
