GlassRoots: Blue Plate Series, 1, 2020

This piece was made by a GlassRoots team led by teaching artists, Jason Minam & Kate Dowd.

Jason is the lead glassblowing artist/instructor at GlassRoots. He graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a Bachelors of Fine Art. While in school, he worked at the Punahou School and assisted professional glass artists throughout Hawaii. Jason continued his education at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, WA, and The Studio of the Corning Museum Glass in Corning, NY. He received his Masters in Fine Arts from Alfred University in New York, where he taught as an Adjunct Professor in the Glass Department. Jason also teaches in the art department at Hudson Community College.

Kate is the assistant program director at GlassRoots and the lead flameworking instructor. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University School of Art with a Bachelors in Art. She has exhibited at The Andy Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh), The Frame Gallery (Pittsburgh), City WithOut Walls (Newark, NJ) and The Shore Institute of The Contemporary Arts (Long Branch, NJ). Kate has completed intensive courses at Urban Glass in Brooklyn, NY, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, ME and Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, WA.

TRANSFORMING LIVES

Since its founding in 2001, GlassRoots has engaged tens of thousands Greater Newark-area youth with its services, including its core Youth Entrepreneurship programs, student field trips and “art-for-art’s sake” classes for the public.

We harness the fire and danger of glassmaking to engage area youth. Our students develop patience, teamwork, creative problem-solving, plus the discipline and resilience they need to safely work with 2200 degree fire and molten glass. They gain hands-on experience in chemistry, physics, and math. They become young entrepreneurs as they develop and market their products. They join a vibrant community in which all learn from each other. Our young artists grow stronger each time they forge glass, and experience the power of their own creativity.
