Gail G. Slockett: Couple on a Bench

Gail G. Slockett: Couple on a Bench

SKU: 2021-00050.

This drawing is one in my series called “The Park Bench”, wherein I portray a variety of people from all walks of life, communicating universally through their body language. Our postures, gestures, and expressions are uniquely revealing, as most often they are unintentional or subconscious. I believe they are a far more reliable and honest form of communication than the spoken word. This was done from a reference photo I took while people-watching in a park in Dupont Circle, Washington, DC.

It is not the subject that inspires me the most, but the drama that lies within. As artists, we are always looking for that emotional response, whether it be from a compelling story, an intriguing expression, or a beautiful play of light and shadow.

Drawing is 99% observing. Seeing how light falls on an object and how it forms the object is the hardest part. Studying drawing has taught me to see in a completely new way. Art enables us to appreciate the beauty and complexity in even the most mundane subjects.

I have traveled from pencil to charcoal to pastels to oils, while trying my hand at portraits, figures, still life, and landscapes. The one discovery I make over and over is that no matter how much I learn there is always so much more to know. The process is often more important than the result. It truly is all about the journey!
