Eva Marie Fitzsimmons: MCA
My paintings are derived from moments in transit, of movement from one place to another. These moments could be from looking out the window of a car or train, or even walking through a building or up the stairs. Each is unique to a date, time and experience. From this, though, comes a more concrete focus on the capturing of one moment in the blink of an eye. This may be through photographing out from a train or car window and reinventing this possibly blurry instance into a permanent object as a painting. These manmade structures transcend their purpose and become a means to the creation of an appealing, almost abstract composition associated with movements of modern times, such as, Precisionism. I seek to eliminate the dirt and grime that may be associated with a factory or a train station, and create an idealization of these subjects in each painting. By painting on flat surfaces, such as masonite or wood, I am able to capture the exactness of these architectural subjects with my brushstrokes on a small scale. This size also creates an intimacy with the viewer; making them step closer to experience the world and allow it to consume them. The works are meant to be intriguing from afar, but just as compelling when viewed from just inches away. By drawing the viewer close, their individual viewing experience is guaranteed. Only one person will be able to fully see each artwork at a time, making them feel connected to the one snapshot of a moment in transit being captured.
