My work challenges personal observations of everyday life through a multidisciplinary approach of printing, papermaking, and assembling. In our fast paced lives of perpetual doing and not enough BEING, I value slowing down to observe and record beauty in the ordinary. Translating these daily phenomenons in my work allows me to share my insights about the world in a deeply introspective and personal manner. In addition to a practicing artist, I am also a proud public high school art teacher. Through teaching and mentoring, my work is further influenced by my students’ creativity and perspectives on the world. From 2016 through 2018, I was the recipient of two grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Through these grants, I was able to bring Master Printer, Eileen Foti, to provide professional development to art educators throughout our 14-school district. I also worked directly with her to develop and execute a student-led printmaking installation exploring each individual’s heritage, traditions, and future goals.
Erica Engfer Pizza: Forever
The pages consist of encaustic and collage on paper. These individual pages are assembled into an accordion style book intended to hang on the wall. Depending on which side the viewer approaches the work from, he/she/they will have a different view.. I began exploring semi automatic rifles in my work in 2017 with the intention of transforming the form and sparking conversation through scale, repetition, and color. Five years later, my desire to revisit this imagery is palpable. While I associate these objects with fear and dread, I intend to present them in a way that leaves the interpretation up to the viewer.
