Inspiration for my ceramics comes from the beauty of the natural world, particularly the woodlands of my childhood home. Butterflies, birds, fruits, flowers and insects are recurring motifs in my work. Whether creating functional or figurative pieces, I am mostly interested in using them as a foundation to build decorative sculptural elements, onto which I layer colored slips and glazes in a painterly application, in order to imitate nature’s vivid colors. The soothing tactile quality of clay as I sculpt, combines with my passion for painting, as the clay becomes a canvas.
Dara Tesse: Sakura Bride
‘Sakura Bride’ is a personification of the springtime of one’s life. The sakura, or cherry tree flower is as ephemeral as youth. The branches of flowers are meant to evoke a bridal veil.
