ARTIST STATEMENT My current work has taken on the role of narrative, personal in conception yet universal in its interaction with the viewer. Most of my work is a reflection of me, my feelings, my interpretations, my memories and opinions. They are collections and assemblages that evoke introspection regarding the self, institutions and expectations. The narratives I express through ceramic sculpture, mixed media and photography express gender identity, relationships, moral and political issues.
Colleen Sweeney Gahrmann: Big Girls Don’ Cry
Big Girls Don’t Cry is a series of photographs paired with a mixed media accordion book. Three 16′ X 20′ digital photographs are the backdrop to a free standing double sided accordion book, displayed on a 5ft. floating shelf. The book can be displayed separately. . A series of staged photographs taken over a three-year period brings awareness of ‘rape culture”. A crime that happens to anyone, anytime, anywhere, whether at home, at school, or at work. The accordion book, designed with a historical view of women in various settings, generates attention to a society that has long tolerated and accepted rape as normal. Rape is rationalized and excused, most often placing blame upon the victim. What one wears, how much they drink, how they dress, rape is rape. Victims deserve to be heard.
