Cindy Wagner: Tango

Cindy Wagner: Tango

SKU: 816.

My current obsession is Ballet paintings. I always enjoyed dance and took dance classes as a young girl. A high school car accident put an end to my flexibility and made dance difficult. It was probably a blessing. I loved to dance but I was never a great dancer. I spent time painting instead at my dad’s set production company. We created sets for many of the NYC ballets. Some of the dance companies would rehearse at the shop utilizing the sets. I have wonderful memories creating sets and going to the theater with my dad. Years later my daughters danced. I drove them back and forth but did not take time to enjoy observing and documenting the process. I created few dance paintings of them and will always regret that. I am now frantically trying to capture the joy and beauty of dance through the happy moments I share with my young granddaughters and grandnieces. These little dancers are exuberant, sometimes graceful and always fun to be with. I know how fast they will grow, change and find other ways to spend their time. I want to capture these moments to have and hold forever.

My childhood was unique and influenced the direction of my career as an artist. My father owned both Empire Stages filming studio and Variety Scenic Studios set production company in Long Island City NY. This gave me the opportunity to meet and learn from some of the most creative artists in New York. Artists as varied as Mark Chagall, Spike Lee and Jim Henson were at the studio at one time or another. My affection for painting began at fourteen when I worked alongside my father, building and painting sets. He was an inventive artist, and my first teacher and mentor. Because of this training my strength and first love is representational painting, but I am willing and able to use a variety of unconventional techniques.

My paintings tell a story. They are inspired by life’s moments and real people. From a young age my mother encouraged me to enjoy every day. My father pointed out the beauty that surrounds me. I hope my paintings make you smile, feel joy and see beauty.

Delicate variations of color and interesting design are prominent in my paintings. Still life items are added because they have personal or symbolic meaning. The Dance Series paintings were sparked by the wonderful little dancers in my life and my memories of backstage moments with my dad at the theater. Most recently and probably as a result of related events in my person life, I have been fascinated with the theme of motherhood, children and capturing the bond between mother and child.  Being a mother of three has had a profound effect on my outlook, priorities and happiness. If art mimics life then, absolute joy should be evident in my painting.

My portfolio of paintings include portraits, still life and landscapes. I use oil paints, acrylic paints and pastels.

I am a member and Past Chairman of The Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists. Other affiliations include The Westport Artist Collective, Connecticut Women Artist Org, The Portrait Society of America. My work has been displayed at universities, museums and galleries in NYC  and Connecticut and have won several awards. My Paintings have been on display at The Salmagundi Club Annual Open Exhibition, The Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Annual Open Show at the New York Arts Club, The Connecticut Pastel Society National Exhibition, City Wide Open Studios in New Haven, CT Women Artist Open Juried Show at the Slater Museum, the Bendheim Gallery in Greenwich, Lyme Art Association, Silvermine Gallery, Westport Downtown Merchants Arts Show, Ross Gallery, University of Connecticut Art Gallery, Lockwood Mathews Mansion Museum, the New Britain Museum and Stepping Stones Museum For Children.
