Carol Nussbaum: Plastic Cows & Pigs

Carol Nussbaum: Plastic Cows & Pigs

SKU: 2022-aoa16.

$400.00

Medium: printed on metal. Size: 16 x 20in. Website: http://www.carolnussbaum.com/wp. The original photograph was taken at a toy shop in New Hope, PA of a colorful bin of miniature plastic childrens toys. This Mandala series comprises a variety of photographic subjects, ranging from bicycle handles to cereal boxes, woven and repeated into a mandala or circle. Found in every culture and faith, a mandala is structured around a unifying center and represents both wholeness and the universe. Mandalas can be found in the circles of the sun, earth and moon but also in our circles of family and friendships. Weaving elements of my travel photographs into a mandala, brings a new mood or movement.

The imagery throughout Nussbaum’s Mandala series are drawn from a hybrid of two ideas: the ancient mandala symbol and Andy Warhol’s Flower series. To create these effects, Nussbaum manipulates her photos in Photoshop, creating a circular pattern. This circular pattern transforms the image and references a mandala, an ancient Hindu and Buddhist symbol representing unity and harmony, and signifying a sacred space. Similar to a mandala, Nussbaum’s photographs contain a circle with a center point that balances a variety of visual elements with an inviting pop of color. The photographs in this series were taken during Nussbaum’s travels within the United States, and abroad in Israel, Jordan, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Her imagery originates from photographs taken throughout the course of these travels in market places, botanical gardens, arboretums, flower shows and roadside stands. New Jersey photographer, Carol Nussbaum, earned her Bachelor of Science in Fine Art at Skidmore College, and worked as an art director in New York City for over a decade. Nussbaum has shown her work in New Jersey, New York, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
