I have been a practicing artist for the past 20 years, focusing primarily on painting. I’m interested in the necessities involved in the act of painting as well as the concept behind a particular piece or series’ germination. The physical and mental act of art making is one of problem solving. My approach to each painting is a conversation between the work and myself. I am not interested in a rote approach to process. There is in me, a refusal to have the work recognized by an identifiable style; ‘A Fine Disregard’ for convention. A series of work is never abandoned. It can always be revisited and informed by new directions that have been taken. New work, in turn, responds to parameters set up in previous series.
Bud McNichol: The Mountain
I have recently started a new series. The genesis for these works came from watching my sons play their gaming consoles. They were fully immersed in these virtual landscapes while using a headset to communicate with their friends. I want to explore the idea of these faux natural settings taking the place of what is outside our front door. The worlds created in these games are vast enough for me to create unique compositions. An antithesis to en plein air.
I am also interested in the way my sons are communicating with their friends. With all the ways technology impacts our lives, the obvious question is; can we ever disconnect? Time to ourselves seems to be ever-fleeting.
