Brian Stymest’s art more than captures the likeness; his unique skill to portray the depth within a subject gives his pieces their own life. His technique is both traditional and realistic, and he works in a range of mediums including pencil, red chalk, charcoal, watercolor and oil.
“I was born in London, England, in 1934, and witnessed the partial destruction of that city by flying bombs and inter-continental rockets. In painting, I yearn to capture the permanence that is not always consistent in life. I was privileged to train in London at the Camberwell School of Art and the Royal College of Art, and to study with Stanley Spencer, R. B. Kitaj, Euen Uglow and David Hockney.”
Brian has exhibited extensively in London, including the Royal Academy, The Young Contemporaries and the Leicester Galleries. Since moving to the US, Brian has exhibited in various galleries in Montclair, NJ, and has won multiple awards from the New Jersey Watercolor Society.
Notable commissions include the Queen Mother, Bette Davis, Groucho Marx, Lord Luke, Michael Jackson, Katherine Hepburn … as well as many who prefer to retain their anonymity.
