Barry Fredericks: HE HAS SOMETHING TO SAY

Barry Fredericks: HE HAS SOMETHING TO SAY

SKU: 2021-00009.

A Black college professor from whom we can all learn.

From the beginning of the Underground Railroad to the shouting on the streets of this country that Black voices must be heard, the American Negro has struggled to assert their rights to be free and equal citizens. Their contributions have strengthened our country and we should all participate in the fight to be fully vested Citizens.

Mr. Fredericks began painting in 1958 while participating in a Master’s Program in Art History at Ohio State University, where he had received his BA degree. After receiving an LLB from the University of Michigan he continued painting in 1960, studying at the Cochrane Gallery of Art in Washington DC. After a hiatus of over 50 years, he has recently refocused his attentions on painting. Mr. Fredericks has studied at One River Art School, The Art School at Old Church, and Bergen Community College and now continues his work with the Bulgarian artist Vessellina Traptcheva.

Mr. Fredericks’s work has appeared in several New Jersey galleries in both group and one-man shows. In 2016 he had a successful one-man show in an established art gallery in Chelsea; in 2017 at a gallery in Wyckoff New Jersey and in 2018 he had a solo exhibition in Ridgewood New Jersey. He has been awarded 1st Prize at an Emerging Artist Jury Show in Ringwood New Jersey and his paintings have since been exhibited at the Belskie Museum, the Ferolle Gallery, the Zebriskie Gallery, the President’s Gallery, and Bergen Gallery at Bergen Community College. His work can be found in the art collection of Virgin Airways, the Fort Lee Public Library, and other private and public collections.

Mr. Fredericks’s body of work focuses on capturing a mood or expression and not the replication of visual image. Because the human face is always expressive many of Mr. Fredericks’s paintings use images of one or more persons to create his desired result. All works begin with a detailed charcoal drawing, color may be added, using oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, or any combination, in whole or in part, to achieve the desired effect.
