‘Shaman’ is a portrait of a young teen undergoing transformation in their life. Themes of life and death are represented by the very colorful and lively rainbow shirt in contrast to the variations of gray in the deer skull and most of the rest of the painting. A clue to the transformation is the suggestion of antlers growing from the Shaman’s head, a metaphor for the birth of a new life.
