Arthur Paxton: Rainy Street, Philadelphia
A gloomy day might not inspire photography, but when I pulled the car over to consult a map, I noticed a street light that brightened my thinking. I grabbed the camera and the light went out. Yet I saw the unwiped rain on the car’s windshield distort the scene in front of me. I liked the rain warping my vision. I selected this particular photo because of the colorfully-vested walker and the dog lunging toward a cop. All the distortions are from rain – indeed, free-flowing water acted as my paintbrush … and kept the cop from pestering me as my car sat in a no standing zone.
