Arianne Petersen: With You – Hypocrisy

I created this piece in early 2020 as the start of a short, new series, which examines the toxic relationships that society has taught us to desire and the inner turmoil that manifests in the wake of those experiences. With You – Hypocrisy examines in particular the pain and frustration caused by the contradictions inherent in these types of relationships.

As this year has continued, I have started to examine how the themes relate to more than just our personal relationships. The frustrations we experience within our personal relationships are a sort of microcosm for the frustrations we experience with society and the world. I look forward to seeing how this expanded view informs the rest of this series.

For me, art has always been about storytelling. Whether it”s about an experience or expression, art should take both the audience and the artist on a journey that elicits emotion and contemplation. We should find ourselves somewhere different after experiencing a work of art.

In my art, the haunting figures and scenes offer glimpses into a realistic fantasy, a place where things are both familiar and otherworldly. In this new landscape, our fears, concerns, and passions can all be examined and addressed with more freedom and understanding. When we take a step back from our own reality, it is easier to discuss that which challenges us.
