Ann Kraus: Winter Sky Scape

Ann Kraus: Winter Sky Scape

SKU: 2022-125.

A brisk wind sweeps the winter sky leaving the clouds dancing across the horizon. Being part of a critique group is an important experience for me as an artist. While many of us work in the solitude of our studios, we need inspiration and constructive criticism to grown and evolve in our craft. Whether it is helpful suggestions or exchanging ideas on optimal materials the exchanges are always made in collegial and supportive environment.

I have enjoyed my time as part of a standing critique group for a number of years. Our relationships have deepened over time and each artist brings a fresh perspective to the monthly discussions. As we reflect on the work that we share, it is always wonderful to see the progress and our collective artistic journey. This mutual admiration and respect is at the heart of a successful critique group and I have benefited greatly by the experience.

Artists Statement

My work represents my interaction with the natural environment and attempts, not simply to replicate a physical location, but to capture the essence of feelings evoked by a specific time and place.

In my periodic travels throughout the world, I have always carried a sketchbook and camera that I use to capture inspirations for my work. Whether in the outback of Australia or fjords of Norway, the emotions that envelop my experiences are sharp and tangible. Capturing these elusive feelings in a two-dimensional format proves challenging and thrilling.

My use of acrylic paint as the main medium allows me an immediacy and vibrancy of color and texture. I work quickly many times on two or more pieces at a time. Putting down the rough outlines on the canvas or paper, I move fluidly to maintain the spiritual context of the piece. As I refine the balance and overall design, I choose a palette of colors that reflect my personal interpretation and recollection. While some may be serene, others may be electrifying and chaotic.

The unique paintings are the result of my personal journey. I hope you appreciate my individual perspective and are moved by the products that are derived from my interpretation of the natural world around us.
