“Girl” was inspired by the documentary ’13th’ and the Safety Pin Movement which began after Trump’s election. Fears were growing that Trump’s base might abuse minorities and as a show of support, Americans attached safety pins to their lapels to signify they are allies and willing to stand up for the vulnerable. Ultimately, there was an evolution of thinking – wearing safety pins was not enough.
Amy Putman: Girl
I am a collector of random and unwanted objects. The kind you find in a flea market, yard sale, basement and on the street. I rarely know what I’ll do with the objects I collect at the time I collect them. If it catches my eye it’s because it intrigued or inspired me and I believe I’ll create something with it someday. The objects inspiring the artwork in this entry are integral to expressing my feelings and ideas about issues for which I care deeply. I think of this work as Socially Conscious art.
