My most recent work has been an exploration of self-portraiture. After many years of body image struggles, taking photos of myself is challenging but has aided in a steadily growing confidence. By shooting through fabric, I adorn certain features with new shapes which allows me to see myself from a different perspective. By playing with natural light and shadow, I emphasize what had previously plagued me with insecurities but now gives me strength. And through concept, I hope to combat society’s expectations and fabricated ideals. Although it can be an arduous process, venturing out of my comfort zone has provided the long-awaited reward of self-acceptance, a sentiment I encourage others to accrue as well.
Amy Joyce Winkler: Maverick
By shooting through fabric, I adorn certain features with new shapes which allows me to see myself from a different viewpoint. ‘Maverick’ represents being rebellious in my self-expression after many years of feeling as if I had to hide who I was.
