The patterns often symbolize social and political issues that are on my mind, and just seep out into the work. For example in the artist’s book I have embedded a faucet spewing unusable water, then turned that into variable patterns in the canvas backdrop..
Leslie Nobler: Take Refuge: Fans
This scroll that celebrates patterns and surfaces from Africa (ankara/wax prints) is also inspired by Hilma af Klint. In it the surfaces switch from my original digital painting printed on heavy cotton, to African fabric, and appliqued felt fan motif(s). There’s a hidden story of war’s destruction near the bottom, which has an askew-pattern (algorithmic) representation of a bombed home.. This work reflects my deep investigation into pattern on and into surfaces. They begin as drawings and photographs and eventually become a sort of hybrid as I rework them digitally. Lastly, I print the digital art onto unusual surfaces which I collage by hand
