Inness (1823-1894) bought and moved into his estate in Montclair in 1885 and used Montclair in many titles of his later works. He said, “You must suggest to me reality, you can never show me reality”. He painted during continued his travels to places like the Adirondacks, Montreal and Europe and drew upon his Transcendentalist belief in the bond between the natural and the spiritual existence and concern for worker’s rights. My work has parallels in its’ contempt for the bourgeoise portraiture of the industrialists in NJ.
