Artist Statement My art is a record of my Arab identity and every viewer is part of my achievement. Born in the United States to exiled parents Samar Hussaini visualizes layered challenges and enriching distinctions of being an Arab-American and strives to create thought-provoking ideas of dialogue and hope. She tells the story of Arabic culture in a positive light transforming the narrative portrayed during this turbulent time. Her work reveals the story of Arab people in a humanizing way and depicts the many layers of rich cultural icons that create a strong identity. Hussaini uses elements such as traditional embroidered cross stitch indicating regional identity; Arabic icons such as the Keffiyeh (head scarf) and the hand stitched Thobe (dress) that all relate to her heritage; and the writings of her father Dr. Hatem Hussaini from over 25 years ago that speaks to the continuing plight of Arabic people. Mixed media elements such as paper, charcoal, pencil, metal leaf and acrylic paint on canvas, reveal intense personal experiences luring the viewer in to uncover the depths of an intricate and multi-challenged reality. Hussaini’s works isolate movement and emotions — vitalizing new sequences and illuminating an inseparable relationship between layers. Samar Hussaini is an Arab American, Fine Artist and Graphic Designer. She lives and creates fine art outside of NYC in West Orange, NJ. Bachelor of Arts from University of Maryland, with a double major in Studio Art and Art History and Masters from Pratt Institute in Communication Design.
Samar Hussaini: Matter of Peace
