The direction my paintings take are greatly influenced by the spontaneous quality of watercolors. Sometimes it is solely the fluidity and lyrical quality of watercolors and other times my work explores the intersection of different media like collage and pen and ink with watercolors. The two themes that have been recurring in my paintings recently are imagined landscapes and the Gyan mudra – a hand gesture used in meditation. Seemingly very different themes but connected through my process of painting. I love the elegance of the Gyan mudra. The mudra in my paintings have a landscape like quality beckoning the viewer to traverse the gentle undulations of the hand gesture almost like taking a meditative walk through a quiet hilly terrain. The forms in my landscapes evolve from the cascading wet washes into an amalgamation of natural images and my personal emotional response to our beautiful natural world. I want my viewers to come away from my paintings with a sense of stillness and calm. The paintings beseech us to experience a pause from the hectic, fast paced lives we find ourselves leading in the modern world.
Munira Bootwala: Gyan Mudra
the Gyan mudra is a hand gesture used in meditation. I love the elegance of the Gyan mudra. The mudra in my painting has a landscape like quality beckoning the viewer to traverse the gentle undulations of the hand gesture almost like taking a meditative walk through a quiet hilly terrain.
