For years I worked almost entirely in landscape, seduced by the interaction of land, water, and light. Always specific to place, I’ve hiked and climbed there, marveling at space: how it pushes up against, and how it reaches deep. Things have happened in my life to pull me into the pain of relentless loss, which I’ve confronted in my work in my own way. My time in my studio is filled with tender and vigorous exploration, both balm and spiritual quest. I invite you to dive with me into the depth and mystery, the constantly changing swell of cloud and sky, be enfolded in the twisting arms of the Trees of Ra’anana, to dance in the mountains, float in the serene seas, get lost in the blue. ‘Trees of Ra’anana: Tangling” is one of an ongoing series of drawings about the immense, sensuously-vined trees on Ahuza Street in Ra’anana, Israel, near my sister’s home. When I first started photographing them many years ago, I was drawn to these majestic trees and their sensuous/sexual forms. By the time I started to actually make these drawings, my sister had been diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimers. As she declines rapidly with Early Onset Alzheimers, the majestic twisting fibers morph into neurons and tangles in the brain. Some see vessels, some a dark forest. It is an unfolding. My life has taken me to the darkest places. When I can break through, I find my own resilience. The Cloud Series has been a place where I can explore deep sadness, infinity, music, and love. These two pieces, “Cloud Series: Opening” and “Cloud Series: Flood” happened while I was feeling free and exploratory. For me they represent possibility, as my life is opening, and my heart is flooding.
Laura Lou Levy: ‘Cloud Series: Flood’
