Stuart Larson, Artist Statement I am fascinated by the unexpected in image generating systems. To make these images, I poured household liquids directly on the glass of the scanner – a substance which is inherently detrimental to the scanner itself. I glued a guardrail around the glass of the scanner to keep the liquids from seeping into the electronics. The texture, color, and detail of these images are crafted through the choice and thickness of the liquids. I see this variation as digital paintings, as I am painting with brush and knife directly on the glass of the scanner. While a painter (most often) paints a permanent image, I am painting a temporal image that must be captured even in the midst of disappearing. This parallels the use of beauty products. The appearances these products create are fleeting, and must be documented in order to have a lasting effect. I strive to create that singular solitary second when at first seeing the work, the translation of wonder, when all else is forgotten, and the distracted mind, for a brief instance, is quieted.
