Nancy Iovino: Untitled oval

Nancy Iovino: Untitled oval

SKU: 2021-00308.

Nanci is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work features a combination of drawing, painting, and collage. In her most recent work, she was inspired by the pride flag as a starting point to expresses her complex feelings about being a mother of an LGBTQ child in today’s society. In “DNA”, Nanci has used photos from a “stumbled upon” pride parade that took place the day President Obama made gay marriage legal as her groundwork. Watching her daughter more than the parade, she remembers wondering when will her daughter feel brave enough to come out to her. The layers of texture and pattern, and delicate line drawing in “DNA” reflect her mixed emotions of fear and guilt, love and pride, that are intertwined with feelings of disconnect and helplessness as she watches her child struggle with her personal truths. “Disconnected ” 11×14 also begins with a photograph image. With the palm open, but also broken, Nanci is acknowledging the current social challenges for LGBTQ child while maintaining hope for the future.
