Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern: The Garden, after Bosch
“The Garden,” began as an homage to the “Garden of Earthly Delights,” by Hieronymus Bosch, an icon of art-history which has captivated me for decades. Initially conceived in 2018, my piece was meant as a lighthearted, rollicking, and decorative large mixed media drawing and painting. I began this extremely detailed artwork in fall 2019, and as I continued work on it during 2020, much of the details and figures were very influenced by the stress, fear, and rules that were imposed on us resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Consequently, the viewer will uncover multiple smaller stories buried within the larger narrative of the work. I am pleased “The Garden” had come to more evenly reflect both dark and light aspects of humanity, thereby paying even greater homage to Bosch’s original work.
