Linda Vonderschmidt-LaStella: The Divine Dance
The Divine Dance
A studio artist and educator, I have worked with clay as a primary medium for over 30 years. For me, clay is not merely “the material that I use,” but a genuine co-creator of the objects I make. For me working with clay is a relational experience that is extremely important to what I do and how I create. I stand as creature with creature in the making process, not dominating the material, but rather working in a very collaborative way.
I began working on this symbolic graphic early in the pandemic. The call for everyone to quarantine led me to go deep into my core and engage with my Creator. Coming from a Catholic tradition, a recognition of God as Trinity was embedded in me and having recently done reading by a contemporary spiritual writer where the inner life of the Three is described as a flow and a pattern that underlies all of creation, I wanted to image that concept. While similar to symbols in the Celtic tradition, I worked to create an image that had a genuine continuous flow within and yet included the sharing of that with all creation.
It became basically a line drawing in clay to which I added a little relief. I cast a mold from the original work and am now exploring surface treatments.
